Abstract 1

I make a lot of figurative work — figures, animals, land. But I started with abstracts, because I was fascinated with composition and the power of suggestion. Abstract 1 is where I stopped trying to name what I was seeing and just let the energy and lines do the work. I don't always know what a piece is about until it's finished. For this one, I was thinking about ancestral tomahawks, and buffalo. And the sun — it shows up everywhere in my work, and I've stopped trying to explain why.
