Ancestors Point the Way

I think about direction a lot — where I came from, what I'm pointed toward. The ancestors aren't just behind me. They're in the land, in the blood, in the way I move through the world. When I painted this I was trying to show what it feels like to be aimed at something by people who lived a thousand years ago. That's what deep time actually does: it gives you a direction.
