The Toucan’s Counsel

In Central American folktales and across Ngäbe-Buglé tradition, the toucan is no ordinary bird. It moves between worlds — a messenger, a carrier of wisdom from places the living can’t reach on their own. When one lands near you and opens its bill, you’re supposed to listen.

This warrior isn’t sure he wants to. Arms crossed, knife in hand, eyes set with the particular stubbornness of someone who has already made up their mind. The toucan leans in anyway. The sun watches. The foliage holds its breath.

Will he listen? That’s the question the painting leaves open — because it’s always the question.
