Food is ceremony. In Haudenosaunee tradition, the Three Sisters — corn, beans, and squash — are not just crops; they are relatives who feed the people. To gather and eat together is to maintain the relationships that hold a community together. My ancestors have been saying this for thousands of years. It has never been a casual invitation.
