I Understand

To understand is to listen well enough to receive what someone is giving you. This word in Cayuga implies presence — you cannot understand without attending. In a language that was suppressed, punished, and nearly erased from living memory, to say 'I understand' is also to say: I am still here. I am still listening.

This piece is part of the Cayuga Language Series and is not available for purchase. It is offered here as a gift to the community.
